Biography Brian GM Durie
Born and raised in Scotland, Dr. Brian Durie graduated in medicine in 1966 at the University of Edinburgh. After several apprenticeships in Scotland and at prestigious U.S. institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota, Dr. Durie completed his apprenticeship and moved to Tucson to start his work at the University of Arizona in the department of onco-hematology. In 1981 awarded the title of Professor of Medicine specializing in onco-hematology.
In Arizona Dr. Durie develops along with his colleague, Dr. Sidney Salmon, the Durie-Salmon Staging System for staging a method to assess accurately and objectively the progress of multiple myeloma. From this original formula and used for over twenty-five years has developed the International Staging System, which will soon be introduced into standard practice for assessment of multiple myeloma worldwide.
In 2006 Dr. Durie received the Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award for "doctor who most exemplifies a singular dedication and compassion for myeloma patients and for the treatment of this disease" in February 2009 he received the prestigious Waldenstrom's Award for his outstanding achievement in research on multiple myeloma . Dr. Durie has published in his name and with other colleagues more than 400 research and treated with 5 books on myeloma.
To date, Dr. Durie holds many senior positions: director of the National Center for hematologic malignancies at Aptium Oncology, founded with the Susie Novis International Myeloma Foundation, a non-profit organization, based in Los Angeles and assist patients for almost twenty years myeloma in the world, pursuing his profession as a specialist in multiple myeloma at the Cedars Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center Hospital in Los Angeles where he continues to visit his patients with dedication and passion that mark.
